Mourinho to meet Florentino Perez next week to finalise Real Madrid return

With the season coming to an end, Real Madrid’s appointment of a new head coach is picking up pace.

It’s clear that Alvaro Arbeloa won’t be playing football beyond the end of the season, even more so given the dressing room issues that have arisen in recent weeks.

The Spanish capital club have turned to “special man” Jose Mourinho to restore order and discipline to the dressing room starting next season.

Key meeting scheduled for next week

Now, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Mourinho will meet with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez next week to finalize his return to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The former Chelsea boss, who is currently in charge of Benfica, had confirmed earlier this week that he had been offered a new contract by the Portuguese giants but that it had not yet been explored.

Now, reports claim that he has informed some members of the Benfica hierarchy that he will be leaving at the end of the season.

So much so that Benfica has begun looking for a replacement coach, with Fulham’s Marco Silva becoming a target.

Perez pushes for manager search

Unlike last summer when Real Madrid appointed Xavi Alonso to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who listened to his advisers, Perez himself is driving the search and appointment of a new head coach.

While Real considered names such as Mauricio Pochettino, Jurgen Klopp, Massimiliano Allegri and Didier Deschamps, Mourinho has emerged as Perez’s preferred candidate.

Now everything is in place for a return to Real Madrid for the ‘Special One’, who won three domestic titles between 2010 and 2013.

Mourinho is expected to sign a two-year contract with the club until 2028.
