Moon Studios Says It’s ‘Fully Independent’, Buys No Rest for the Wicked Publishing Rights From Take-Two

Moon Studios says it has acquired the publishing rights to top-down action RPG No Rest for the Wicked and is now “fully independent.” After lengthy negotiations, the developer has bought back the rights from Take-Two Interactive and will publish the game independently when it launches. “No Rest for the Wicked” will be released in Steam Early Access in April 2024 and will be available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.

Moon Studios goes “fully independent”

The developers of Ori and the Blind Forest shared the update in a new Wicked Inside Showcase demo, explaining their silence since the launch of The Crucible content update for No Rest for the Wicked in June 2024.

“After months of negotiations, we have reached an agreement to purchase the publishing rights to No Rest for the Wicked so that Moon Studios can become fully independent. This legal process will take time and we cannot reveal much while it is ongoing,” studio co-founder and director Gennadiy Korol said in the video.

“But today, we’re excited to announce that it’s complete and Moon Studios is now fully independent,” said Thomas Mahler, CEO and Creative Director of Moon Studios. “We believe this will give you more confidence in our vision, as we’ll have the freedom to build The Evil Dead the way we want without having to stay silent again,” he added.

“No Rest for the Wicked” is published by Private Division, a subsidiary of Take-Two, and launched as an early access version on Steam last year. However, Take-Two sold the indie gaming label in November 2024 to focus on its core franchises. The rights to most of Private Division’s live and unreleased games are purchased by buyers, but Take-Two chose to retain the rights to No Rest for the Wicked.

Evil content is constantly updated

In addition to the studio update, Moon Studios also announced the next major content update for No Rest for the Wicked, The Breach. The studio says this is the biggest update to the game yet.

Breach adds more story content, campaign progression, more playable areas, enemies, and boss fights to the base game. Content updates will launch on April 30, 2025.

No Rest for the Wicked is a top-down action role-playing game developed by Moon Studios, the developers of Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. The game was announced in 2023 and released on Steam Early Access last year. While a release date for the full version has yet to be confirmed, No Rest for the Wicked will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.
