Monroe charter school faces immediate closure after board finds it was ‘operating illegally’

Monroe Charter School was ordered to close immediately after state review board members found the school was operating illegally.

They allege that Monroe Charter Academy, a K-8 school, has been remote for more than a month without permission while it awaits its move to a new campus in Matthews.

The move was initially approved by the North Carolina Charter School Review Board, but the school lacked a certificate of educational occupancy to move in, The Charlotte Observer reported.

School principals blamed delays in the approval process.

The school has been operating remotely since Nov. 17, exceeding the typical limit of five days of remote instruction for charter schools, the Observer reported.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction froze the school’s state funding on Friday, forcing it to rely on local and residual funds.

Monroe Charter Academy leaders appeared before a review board Tuesday to ask for a seven-year charter renewal, but board members voted unanimously to revoke the school’s charter.

Without a charter, Monroe Charter Academy would face immediate closure.
