It’s not the kind of season No. 10 Maryland men’s lacrosse fans were expecting, but two Terps players were celebrated for their performances on the court after a 13-12 triple overtime victory over Virginia.
Goaltender Brian Ruppel, who made a season-high 14 saves in the Terps’ win, was named the Big Ten Expert of the Week. In 2023, he had a career-high 15 saves — also against Virginia.

Ruppel made two key saves in the third overtime to suffocate Virginia and send his team running the other way to secure the victory.
Peter Lake was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his performance that went off the stat sheet. Against Virginia’s lethal defense, Lake had the best game of his college career, forcing two turnovers and scooping four ground balls.
When Will Schaller went down with an injury in the Terps’ first overtime period, Lake was forced to assume the primary defender role for the Terps. He did a great job helping Maryland’s defense get organized and Maryland won.
The Terps’ next game is Saturday at ninth-ranked Penn State.
