WASHINGTON (AP) — Charlie McAvoy scored twice, Frazier Minten scored the shootout winner and the Boston Bruins defeated the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Saturday.
Minton’s backhand beat Washington’s Logan Thompson in the ninth-round shootout to give the Bruins their third win in five games and help Boston advance in the Eastern Conference wild-card race.

Rasmus Sandin had a goal and an assist and Matt Roy also scored for the Capitals, who have lost two of their past three games.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Capitals applied the pressure to start the second quarter, and it paid off. Just 1 minute and 15 minutes into midfield, Roy fired an 86 mph shot past Boston’s Jeremy Swayman and into the top corner to give Washington the lead. This is Roy’s first goal since November 17, ending a 45-game scoring drought.
A few minutes later, McAvoy hit a one-timer in traffic, past Thompson, to tie the game at 1. McAvoy has scored in six straight games and has scored in 15 of the last 16 games.
Sandin became the third defenseman to take the field, and his spot-up shot went past Swayman to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead.
