It’s February 22nd, and the JJ McCarthy conversation isn’t over yet. If you’re tired of it, you can blame Sam Darnold for only making things worse for Vikings fans and McCarthy.
As the Vikings face one of the most critical seasons in recent memory, everyone is offering their thoughts and two cents. The team has made changes in the front office, firing Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, the man who drafted him, and interim front office leader Rob Brzezinski needs to make some tough choices.

One thing that will continue to be discussed, mostly with McCarthy, is who can come in and compete with him? Alex Kay of Bleacher Report says the team could be a good fit for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, who is looking for a fresh start.
Kay wrote: “Richardson is a promising talent, but he has yet to live up to the lofty expectations set by his first-round draft position. While Minnesota will try to develop JJ McCarthy after a difficult sophomore season, the No. 10 pick in 2024 has proven to be injury-prone early in his NFL career. He has already missed his entire rookie season and 7 of 2025. game, which makes quarterback depth an issue. ” Even if he doesn’t emerge as the club’s potential starter, Richardson would be a significant upgrade over Max Brosmer at QB2 — especially if Minnesota elects not to retain backup Carson Wentz. “
Head coach Kevin O’Connell has shown his love for the quarterback program. The relationship between Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold is important to him, and having him fill in for McCarthy in an emergency might be the perfect situation for both teams.
