Two helicopters crashed mid-air in southern New Jersey on Sunday, killing one person and injuring another, officials said.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the planes, an Enstrom F-28A and an Enstrom 280C helicopter, “collided in mid-air” near Hammonton Municipal Airport around 11:25 a.m. The statement said only the pilot was on board when the two helicopters collided.
Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Freer told The Associated Press that rescuers extinguished flames that engulfed a helicopter.
Hammonton Fire Chief Sean Macri told CNN that the helicopter crashed in a field in Hammonton and both victims were airlifted to a trauma center.
The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the accident, according to the FAA.
Hammonton is located in Atlantic County, about 35 miles from Philadelphia and near the New Jersey Pine Barrens, a vast forest wilderness.
The Hammonton Fire Department has asked bystanders to avoid the area while emergency services respond to the incident.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
