MG Windsor EV With 331km Range, 80 Connected Car Features Launched in India: All You Need to Know

The MG Windsor electric vehicle (EV) was launched in India on Wednesday. The British car company says the Windsor EV is its first “smart CUV,” or crossover utility vehicle. Its name is inspired by Windsor Castle in England. Built on the company’s “Pure EV” platform, it is a rebadged version of the Wuling Cloud electric vehicle sold in Indonesia and other markets, and boasts a range of up to 331 kilometers, Aero Lounge seats, Infinity View glass roof, artificial intelligence (AI)-based voice commands and more than 80 connectivity features utilizing i-SMART technology.

This is the first model launched by JSW MG Motor India, a joint venture between India’s JSW Group and China’s SAIC Motor, and joins the MG ZS EV and Comet EV in the company’s electric vehicle lineup.

MG Windsor EV price in India

MG Windsor EV price in India starts at Rs. 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). However, the company says this is just introductory pricing. Bookings are already open and exclusive test drives of the car will begin on September 26. Bookings for the MG Windsor EV will begin on October 3.

It comes in three variants – Excite, Exclusive and Essence – and four colorways: Starburst Black, Pearl White, Clay Beige and Turquoise Green. Along with the debut of Windsor EV, MG has also launched a Battery as a Service (BaaS) ownership program that eliminates the upfront cost of batteries, allowing buyers to only pay for their usage. The plan starts at Rs. 3.5 per kilometer for the battery.

The first owners of the MG Windsor EV will benefit from a lifetime battery warranty. The company is also offering free public charging services for one year through eHUB on the MG app. MG Windsor EV owners can also enjoy a 3-60-month guaranteed buyback scheme, which is said to help the vehicle retain 60% of its value for up to 3 years or 45,000 kilometers, whichever comes first.

According to the company, the MG Windsor EV is a CUV, albeit with an AeroGlide design similar to a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). It can be considered a crossover between a sedan and a sports utility vehicle (SUV), borrowing select elements from both platforms. In terms of dimensions, it is 4,295 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,677 mm high. The EV’s wheelbase is 2,700 mm, which is likely to provide more space for rear passengers compared to the MG ZS EV.

In terms of design, the Windsor EV features 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights (DRL), vertically stacked LED headlights and taillights, integrated spoiler and recessed door handles. There’s an illuminated MG logo on the front next to the charging port. Inspired by the Wuling Cloud electric car, MG’s latest electric car in India also comes with a glass roof, which the company calls ‘Infinity View’.

Features of MG Windsor electric car

The Windsor EV’s cabin is finished in Knight Black interior and comes with features such as 135-degree multi-level reclining seats (or Aero Lounge), ambient lighting with 256 color options, a digital driver display and a 15.6-inch main infotainment screen that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Other interior features include a 9-way speaker system and rear AC vents.

Windsor EV adopts a five-seater configuration, with rear seats that can recline 60:40, a trunk capacity of 604 liters, and an electric tailgate.

The electric vehicle uses the company’s i-SMART technology and has more than 80 connected car features, such as a digital Bluetooth key. Users can share keys with others via smartphone, eliminating the need for physical key handover while driving the vehicle. Powered by artificial intelligence, it also accepts voice commands.

MG Windsor EV powertrain, battery and safety

MG says the Windsor EV is powered by a single permanent magnet synchronous electric motor mounted on the front axle, producing 134 hp and 200 Nm of torque. However, the company has not revealed its top speed yet. This is made possible by a 38 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which is similar to the battery technology used in the MG ZS EV. It is said that the cruising range on a single charge can reach 331 kilometers.

For safety, the MG Windsor EV is equipped with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and 360-degree cameras. It also comes standard with six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), electronic parking brake with auto-hold function, disc brakes and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
