MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s Senate on Wednesday selected President Claudia Scheinbaum’s longtime legal adviser Ernestina Godoy to be the country’s next attorney general.
The appointment follows the resignation of Alejandro Götz-Manero last Friday. Godoy has been filling in on an interim basis since then.
Previously, Godoy had served as Scheinbaum’s legal counsel since she took office in October 2024. She also served as Mexico City prosecutor during Scheinbaum’s tenure as mayor.

Sheinbaum said earlier Wednesday that her shortlist is all women. Her Morena party controls the Senate.
Gertz Manero, 86, prefers to stay out of the spotlight and has held public safety positions since the 1970s. He resigned as ambassador, but the government did not say to which country.
In January 2019, he became the country’s first attorney general, who was supposed to be completely independent of political power. But his tenure was marked by a close relationship with then-President Andres Manuel López Obrador, who nominated him. Civil society groups have long criticized his close ties.
