Mets’ Juan Soto injury scare adds another gut punch to plagued season, could trigger early firesale

Mets’ Juan Soto injury scare adds another blow to a troubled season that could trigger an early sell-off Originally appeared on The Sporting News Click here to add Sports News as your go-to source.

The New York Mets are off to a slow start in the 2026 season, currently sitting at 17-25. Things have improved recently, but injuries continue to cause problems for the club.

The latest injury concern involves Juan Soto. The Mets slugger was ejected from the game with an ankle foul.

“Soto exited Wednesday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers in Queens in the seventh inning when M.J. Melendez was at bat for him. In the third inning, Soto took a foul ball on his own leg that appeared to cause him considerable pain, but he remained in the game,” wrote Jayce Evans of USA Today.

The extent of Soto’s injury remains to be determined. He is currently considered an everyday player, but the appointment could still sideline him for some time. This is another big blow for the Mets.

“Fans can hope that Soto’s problem isn’t serious, but this is the 2026 Mets, so optimism isn’t high. New York endured a 12-game losing streak earlier this season. That streak started a few days after Soto left the lineup with an injury and ended the day he returned to the lineup. Things haven’t been that dramatic since then, but they’ve gotten better. They’ve even won two of three series on their most recent road trip. Another potential injury to Soto feels like a punch in the gut. Alicia de Artola of FanSided wrote:

If Soto’s injury keeps him out for another week or more, the Mets could be in trouble again without him. Another tough stretch could end up being the final straw before New York considers a fire sale on some of its top players.

“That’s why the Mets, once they realized the season was a lost cause, were quick to step into the spotlight and let their opponents know they were open for business. They have three of the top trade chips in the game: starters Freddy Peralta, Clay Holmes and infielder Bo Bichette,” writes Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

It’s been a lackluster season in New York, and we’re only halfway through May. If injuries continue to mount at this rate, the Mets may have no choice but to start making moves.

At this point, it might be better for New York to prepare for the future than to continue trying to salvage the 2026 season. Soto’s latest injury is yet another reminder of how seriously the Mets are plagued by injuries, and a potential fire sale could begin sooner rather than later.
