Men set woman on fire in revenge attack

Five men have been convicted of their role in an attack that resulted in a serious house fire in which a woman and a girl were severely burned.

Five other people have previously admitted offenses related to the 2021 incident in Stoke-on-Trent.

Following the 11-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court, Detective Inspector Howard Davies of Staffordshire Police said: “It was a horrific ordeal for a mother to have her home set on fire in front of her daughter by multiple men seeking revenge.”

The men have all been remanded in custody pending the determination of their sentences.

Police said that on the afternoon of December 16, 2021, a fight broke out in Kildare Street, Longton, between 32-year-old Navid Hussain, 26-year-old Bilal Ahmed, 25-year-old Kashif Ahmed and 22-year-old Ali Abbas, all from Stoke-on-Trent.

Reports said Kashif Ahmed was stabbed in the shoulder and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Just before 23:00 that evening, some men came to a house on Beverley Avenue in the Bentilly area of ​​Stoke-on-Trent and asked to speak to Hussain.

Staffordshire Police said the men smashed downstairs windows and poured petrol into the hallway near the front door and outside near the living room window.

Police said a 31-year-old woman was hit in the head and set on fire, suffering 65 percent burns.

She was not expected to survive at the time and was in a coma for two months.

She did survive, but suffered life-changing injuries that required ongoing treatment.

A 13-year-old girl suffered burns to 15% of her right arm and leg.

They smashed an upstairs window and jumped out, leaving the woman with a broken pelvis, broken ribs and a lacerated liver, meaning she had to learn to walk again.

Following the trial, the following five men were convicted:

  • Shakil Uddin, 23, of Oldham – found guilty of attempted murder and arson

  • Lukman Khan, 24, of Stoke-on-Trent – found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent and arson with intent

  • Riyadh Iqbal, 23, of Stoke-on-Trent – found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent and arson with intent

  • Muhammad Sufyaan-Shah, 25, of HMP Hindley, Wigan – found guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

  • Tayyeb Majeed, 23, of Stoke-on-Trent – found guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

Before the trial, the following five men admitted the crimes:

  • Ali Abbas, 22, of Stoke-on-Trent – admitted two counts of attempted murder with intent to endanger life and violent disorder and arson

  • Haris Mahmood, 21, of Stoke-on-Trent – admitted two counts of attempted murder with intent to endanger life and arson

  • Naveed Hussain, 32, of Stoke-on-Trent – admitted violent disorder in a public place and possession of a blade/sharp article

  • Kashif Ahmed, 25, of Stoke-on-Trent – admitted having a violent disorder

  • Bilal Ahmed, 26, of Stoke-on-Trent – admitted having a violent disorder
