The crowd chuckled at a Military Mother’s Day event when First Lady Melania Trump mentioned her husband’s empathy.
President Donald Trump and the First Lady welcome military mothers to the White House on May 6. Melania Trump, the mother of Barron Trump, said a mother’s love and strength are at the core of America’s strength. She then introduced President Trump, who spoke on the “skirmish” with Iran.
“Most people know my husband as a powerful commander in chief, but his empathy transcends that role,” she said as the crowd erupted in laughter and she paused to look back at the president. “…and create a caring leader who always remembers that every American soldier is someone’s child.”
President Trump shrugged, and the first lady smiled back at him, her laughter growing louder. Watch the video below.

The first lady posted an excerpt from her memoir “Melania” on social media, telling the story of how she met her husband.
She said she met Donald Trump while partying with friends at the Kit Kat Club on a Saturday night in September 1998.
“‘Hi, I’m Donald Trump,’ the man said as he walked up to my table, ‘Nice to meet you.’ I recognized the name and knew he was a businessman or celebrity, but little else. He reached out to shake my hand,” she writes in the book. “His eyes were full of curiosity and interest and he jumped at the opportunity, took the seat next to me and started talking.”
She also wrote that he had a beautiful date, so she didn’t think much of it at the time, but she was “magnetically attracted to him.”
They married in 2005 and had a child, Barron Trump, the following year.
