It will take some time for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford to decide on his NFL future. Stafford said he’s had a lot of fun this season and wanted to take some time to reflect before deciding what to do next.
Stafford made the comments during an episode of the “Let’s Go” podcast on Monday. When asked “looking ahead,” Stafford said he would take some time to consider all the variables.

His full answer is:
“There’s a lot that goes into this. It’s a physical, mental and emotional decision. It’s also a personal and family decision. So, we’re going to take some time to work through all of that.”
“I know I’m having fun playing football this season and it’s going to be fun playing for the Rams. So, when I’m ready to figure that out, I’m going to be ready to figure that out. That moment is not right now.”
“I feel like I have a little more time to reflect on the people and the season we just had. I want to appreciate that and give it the time it deserves before I get into personal reflections About what’s next for me and my family. “
Stafford, 37, is having arguably his best season in the NFL in 2025. He leads the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns and will likely be named the league MVP in his 17th season. Stafford has been selected to the first-team All-Pro team. This is the first time in his career that he has received this honor.
Although Stafford is under contract with the Rams through the 2026 season, Stafford is now at an age where retirement is a viable option every offseason. Stafford didn’t want to talk too much about the issue Monday but made it clear he would discuss his future in football with his family.
It was a more thoughtful answer than the one given by head coach Stafford. When asked about Stafford’s future in the NFL, Sean McVay said he expected Stafford to return, then added: “What the hell is this?”
However, McVeigh did add: “If [Stafford] Wants to play,” which leaves some uncertainty about the quarterback’s future.

Stafford doesn’t have much left to accomplish in the NFL so far in his career. He was the No. 1 pick in 2009 and lived up to his draft position. During his career, Stafford made three Pro Bowls, an All-Pro selection, a Comeback Player of the Year award and a Super Bowl championship. He’ll likely soon add an MVP award to his accomplishments.
But, as he showed in 2025, Stafford still appears to be in top form. While the veteran may be on his way out this offseason, his performance in 2025, coupled with the Rams’ nearness to the Super Bowl, could force Stafford to return for a second Super Bowl title.
