Maryland baseball’s 9-run second inning spurs 15-10 win, series sweep over Wagner

Title: Wagner’s Maryland Baseball Parade in Series Final Game, 15-10

Dek: The Terps swept the Seahawks in their first weekend home series.

Maryland Baseball had already struck out in the second inning when left fielder Jordan Crossland reached base for the second time. The Terps scored seven runs on Wagner – six of which came before they recorded it – and a double play to end the period still resulted in one run.

Crossland’s framework is not yet complete. He hit a torpedo over the left field fence for his second home run of the weekend.

The redshirt sophomore’s individual shot capped Maryland’s early surge. Wagner fought back, but the early deficit was too much to overcome and the Terps won 15-10 to complete their first sweep of the season.

Maryland trailed by one run at the start of the second half of the second inning. Back in the dugout, swapping batting helmets for hats, the team leads by eight.

Much of Maryland’s success can be attributed to Wagner’s issues on the mound and in the field. Seahawks head coach Craig Noto went to the bullpen six times in the game, allowing three Terps players to score one run on an error, two runs via passed balls and two runs via batters.

The Terps pitching staff has been better than that, but not much better.

Sophomore Jake Yeager started the game on his third Sunday this year. The right-hander allowed four runs on four hits and struck out just two in four innings while allowing four walk-offs.

Wagner’s Diego Tavares had an RBI double in the top of the third, followed by an RBI single by Jayden Alvarez to further cut Maryland’s lead. An army of Terps began to gallop toward the bullpen, a sign that Yeager’s afternoon was coming to an end.

Maryland’s season-long infield errors began to creep to the edge of the diamond.

Wagner’s Josiah Ross passes the ball to third baseman Jackson Sirois. The sophomore’s pitch sailed over the diamond, pulling first baseman Paul Jones II out of the bag and allowing Ross to reach safely.

But Sirois redeemed himself with just one batter, prompting a 5-4-3 double play that quickly ended the top of the fourth inning.

Joseph Fredericks took over for Yeager in the top of the fifth inning but struggled mightily. The Washington, D.C., native walked two batters with no outs and allowed two more hits, finishing with two runs.

Suddenly, Maryland’s lead was down to one point. Christopher Cespedes replaced Fredericks and escaped the set without taking any damage.

The Seahawks have defensive issues plaguing them. After an error by Wagner’s shortstop, the Terps advanced to one base, bringing Crosland home. One batter later, the Terps drew another walk to extend their lead.

“us [led] walking league [last year]. The most important thing to me is swing decision-making, and it has to be that every day,” Swope said. “That’s really our motto offensively. “

Logan Hastings ended up being the bright spot on Maryland’s pitching staff. After a week off the mound, he took over the seventh spot. Hastings struck out his first in four innings and collected four strikeouts in a three-out save.

“He’s going to be a key for us in late-game situations,” Swope said. “I trust him the most of all.”

Three things to know

1. The rise of Brayden Martin. Martin had a great performance against Wagner. The right fielder went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, back-to-back stolen bases and two runs of his own. Martin now leads the team in runs and stolen bases and currently has a .438 batting average.

2. Return to the victory column. On Sunday, Maryland swept the weekend series at home for the first time since 2024, and the Terps have won three straight games against Bryant. Maryland lost 2-1 to UCLA in the 2025 home weekend series opener.

3. Expand conference rankings. Maryland currently leads the Big Ten in total wins with 103 games. 46 of those came against Wagner in their first home series.
