Markram and Linde guide South Africa to win over West Indies in T20 series opener

PAL, South Africa (AP) — South Africa captain Aiden Markram smashed an unbeaten 86 off 47 balls on Tuesday to help the Proteas beat the West Indies by nine wickets in the first game of the three-match T20 international series.

Markram hit 9 boundaries and 3 sixes as he shared 83 with Lhuan-dre Pretorius (44 balls) and 93 with Ryan Rickelton for 176-1 with 13 balls to spare.

Left-arm spinner George Linde earned man-of-the-match honors with figures of 3-25, while Keshav Maharaj and Corbin Bosch took two wickets each as the visitors reached 173-7 in 20 overs after South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Shimron Hetmyer top-scored for West Indies with 48 runs off 32 balls, including 4 boundaries and 3 sixes. Heitmyer and Rovman Powell (29 not out) shared the sixth wicket with a total of 74 runs.

The second game will be played in Centurion on Thursday.
