But Meta’s virtual universe company lost a lot of money
There’s no doubt that today’s best smart glasses are better than ever, but they haven’t really gone mainstream yet – something Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg believes will happen in the future, despite his digital Metaverse company posting a massive $6 billion loss in its last financial quarter.
Zuckerberg publicly stated during an earnings call (via TechCrunch ) that “it’s hard to imagine that in a few years most of the glasses people are wearing won’t be AI-powered glasses” – comparing the wearables revolution he envisions to the shift from classic flip phones to smartphones.
Zuckerberg pointed out that billions of people around the world wear glasses or contact lenses for vision correction, which is a lot of potential customers. He also said sales of Meta smart glasses, including the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, tripled last year.
Tech makers are certainly interested: Google and Samsung are launching smart glasses, with Samsung each confirming that its long-awaited AR glasses will launch later this year.
Apple is rumored to be developing its own smart glasses, and earlier this week, Snapchat developer Snap announced the formation of a new subsidiary called Specs to promote its future smart glasses products.
At the same time, in the virtual universe…

Zuckerberg hopes the smart glasses category will turn out better than his efforts so far in enabling the Metaverse: Meta Reality Labs reported a loss of $6 billion in the final quarter of 2025, up from $4.43 billion in the previous quarter, according to CNBC.
As you may recall, the Metaverse is the completely virtual world that Meta wants us all to live in now – which is part of the reason the company changed its name from Facebook to Meta. While a fair number of us enjoy virtual reality games, users don’t have much interest in spending a lot of time as digital avatars.
Meta hasn’t completely abandoned the Metaverse, with some suggesting that Horizon (the official name of the Metaverse) might become more of a Roblox clone with more of a focus on mobile devices.
We’ll have to see what happens, but these economic losses continue to go in the wrong direction. The future of smart glasses looks even brighter, especially as the AI assistants that power them continue to advance.
