Tensions briefly flared during Kentucky basketball’s road game against Tennessee, but head coach Mark Pope made sure the game never got over the line.
After the game, cameras captured Kentucky guard Ortega Owe talking to Tennessee forward Jalen. What started as trash talk quickly escalated when Carey pushed Ove. Brendan Garrison immediately stepped in to support Ove.

Before things could spiral, Pope sprinted from the sideline straight to the middle.
Pope grabbed Ovie and Garrison by the jersey and physically pulled them away from the confrontation, making it clear that Kentucky wasn’t going to get into unnecessary trouble. Officials quickly intervened, and the only real contact was a push from Carey before the situation was defused.
The referees were unable to call any technical fouls or ejections after the game, which was just an emotional moment in one of the SEC’s most heated rivalries.
Ove has become one of Kentucky’s emotional leaders, full of passion and confidence, especially in a parkway environment. At the same time, Garrison displayed the teammate mentality that every coach wants in that he was ready to guard his players without hesitation.

But it was the pope’s response that mattered most. In a loud, hostile building, one extra push or one negative reaction could cause the SEC office to review the incident, leading to possible suspension.
Instead, Pope made sure his team continued to focus on getting off the court.
Kentucky then defeated Tennessee 80-78, another game Kentucky had to come back from to win. After looking dead three games ago, the big blue nation now have reason to be hopeful.
