Maple Leafs fire assistant coach Marc Savard as Toronto’s power play continues to struggle

TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Maple Leafs fired assistant coach Marc Savard on Monday after losing three straight games midway through the NHL season.

The 48-year-old former player Savard was in charge of the main game. The team missed 4 goals and ranked bottom in the league with a 13.3% shooting rate. There was no immediate indication that the organization was hiring an outsider to replace him on coach Craig Berube’s staff.

Savard, in his second season with the Maple Leafs, joined the team in 2024 when Berube was hired. He previously served as an assistant coach with the Calgary Flames and St. Louis Blues and coached the Ontario Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfire youth team.

Toronto has lost 20 of its first 35 games and is in last place in the Atlantic Division, one point ahead of the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
