The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says it is investigating an incident in which a man was shot multiple times by police in Savannah.
They were responding to a domestic conflict and witnesses said a child was thrown into a dumpster.
Malik Hendrix, 23, of Savannah, was shot multiple times by three police officers on Saturday afternoon. No officers were injured.
The Savannah Police Department was dispatched to an apartment on Emerald Avenue for a domestic dispute. The caller said a woman was being chased by a man and described Hendrix, the Savannah Police Department said.
Police said the woman had been reunited with her children when they arrived. The child, whose age was not disclosed, was taken to hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Police said they were initially unable to find Hendrix.
As they searched, Hendrix walked up to them and asked if they were looking for him. According to the GBI report, police said he had “his right hand concealed inside his jacket near his chest and abdomen.”
The Savannah Police Department said that instead of raising his hands as ordered, Hendrix took his right hand out of his jacket and pointed it at officers “with an object.”
Just then, the police opened fire.
Police also released a K9 unit who arrested him, causing him to be more seriously injured.
Officers provided medical aid to Hendrix until emergency medical services arrived and transported him to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators later discovered Hendricks pointed his cellphone at police.
It was later determined that the object Hendrix pointed at officers was a cell phone.
Once the investigation is completed, the case will be submitted to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review, the GBI said.
