A man who drugged and repeatedly raped another man who fell ill and died has been jailed.
Derek Rowley, 46, and his victim met on the dating app Grindr before taking methamphetamine, ketamine and GHB and having sex (known as chemsex) at Rowley’s home in Gillingham, Kent.
The sex was initially consensual, but Rowley drugged the unconscious 61-year-old victim and raped him live.
Rowley was sentenced to 17 years in prison at Maidstone Crown Court on Thursday.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said CCTV footage from the bedroom showed Rowley squirting a liquid – believed to be a drug called GHB – into the victim’s mouth and continuing to have sex with him after he appeared to lose consciousness at 17:00 GMT.
The court also heard how Rowley gave a “thumbs up” to people watching content on their laptops.
At 21:53, the ambulance was called. The victim was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived.
Rowley was found guilty of 11 counts of rape and one count of administering a drug with intent following a trial in November.
“The scariest way”
The court heard the victim died of poisoning from a mix of drugs. Rowley is not criminally responsible for the victim’s death.
Judge Robert Lazarus said Rowley had a “complete disregard” for the victim’s welfare.
He added: “It needs to be pointed out that any humane person would have called an ambulance as soon as the victim fell into a coma rather than repeatedly raping him over the course of an hour and 20 minutes.”
“You intended to drug the victim to put him into a coma and once you did that you intended to rape him multiple times while live streaming.”
An impact statement read to the court on behalf of the victim’s partner described him as “one of the good guys”.
A statement from the victim’s family said his treatment involved “reckless behavior” that stripped him of his dignity.
After the sentencing, Inspector Lee Niles of Kent Police said it was a “disturbing case”.
“Roley exploited his victim in the most appalling way, with a complete disregard for his welfare,” he added.
