Man arrested for murder of half-brother left gas burners open on stove while victim’s kids slept: police

Redlands police say a 32-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the death of his half-brother.

The incident occurred Tuesday morning on Kansas Street when officers received a report of a man shooting a gun inside an apartment building, the Redlands Police Department said in a statement Wednesday morning.

When police arrived on scene, they found a man dead from an apparent gunshot wound. He was identified as 36-year-old Aaron Richard Rivera.

After the shooting, the suspect, later identified as Rivera’s half-brother Zachary Aaron Brodowski, fled the scene but left the gas burner on the apartment stove while Rivera’s two children slept, according to police.

“Family members and evidence at the scene identify the suspect as Zachary, the victim’s half-brother,” officials said. “Surveillance cameras at the apartment complex also show Brodowski leaving the scene immediately after the shooting.”

Investigators later found Brodowski and his vehicle, a silver 2008 Ford Focus, at Brodowski’s residence in Calimesa. Brodowski was taken into custody after SWAT members and detectives conducted surveillance of the residence.

A firearm and clothing matching those worn at the time of the shooting were recovered, authorities added.

Brodowski is being held without bail at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on charges of murder and attempted murder.
