Mahindra Renames Electric Car Amid Aviation Giant IndiGo’s Trademark Challenge

India’s Mahindra & Mahindra said on Saturday it would rename its latest electric car, a major move after aviation market leader IndiGo sued the automaker over its use of its call sign and widely used brand name “6E”.

While trademark infringement cases are common in India, legal disputes between large public companies are rare. India’s largest airline IndiGo sued Mahindra in the Delhi High Court last week, accusing it of trademark infringement over the use of “6E” in Mahindra’s latest electric car brand “BE 6e”.

The automaker Mahindra said in a statement that the car will be renamed ‘BE 6’ but that “IndiGo’s claims are baseless” and it will challenge them in court proceedings.

“We also find it disgraceful for two large Indian multinationals to engage in a distracting and unnecessary conflict, when in fact we should be supporting each other’s growth and expansion,” Mahindra said.

IndiGo, which accounts for 60% of India’s domestic aviation industry, has been using “6E” across all its brands for years, including its co-branded credit cards and in-flight magazines.
