The year saw the end of several notable businesses, from the long-loved Tommy’s Famous Burgers to the troubled Executive Inn. Here’s a look at what happened to these 40 places that were locked out, shut down or left town in 2025.
The A-J has been tracking openings, closings and business announcements since Jan. 1, 2025 and giving monthly reports. The information found here uses that data.

1102 Bubble Tea & Coffee closes after 1 year and is quickly replaced

What happened: The trendy drink stop first opened on Oct. 19, 2024, but closed around a year later. A sign on the door alerted potential customers to the closure about a month before a new business opened in its place. The location is now SN Banh Mi – Vietnamese Sandwich & More.
When: Mid-October.
Where: 5815 82nd St., Unit 150.
Abbott’s Frozen Custard freezes after 1 year
What happened: The custard shop first opened in September 2024, but appeared to lose traction shortly after its first anniversary.
When: Early December.
Where: 11112 Slide Road.
Allsup’s Express closed a location in growing convenience store boom
What happened: Employees were relocated after the store closed just short of 3 years of business. Though an exact reason was not given, Lubbock has seen a boom in convenience store growth, led largely be Toot’n Totum’s Lubbock or Bust campaign.
When: Late April.
Where: 1113 University Ave.
Bone Daddy’s locked out of restaurant
What happened: In May, Bone Daddy’s was locked out of its location by the building owners. The company still lists the location on its website and Google has it listed as temporarily closed. However, it has had no social media presence since April and calls have not gone through since July 1.
When: Early May.
Where: 3008 West Loop 289.
Cafe J closes ahead of bulldozing for student housing

What happened: In March 2025, the city council gave the final approval for a proposed 584-bed student housing development. While the council’s vote was unanimous, the community was notably divided after three months of debate. In the end, the developers got what they wanted, and will tear down the Godbold building that houses Cafe J. The housing development is expected to be completed in 2028 or 2029.
When: Dec. 14.

Carlito’s Way Foods Puerto Rican Cuisine closes for move
What happened: The owner closed the truck before moving to Florida.
When: Feb. 15.
Where: Mobile food truck.
Cinemark Southwest Lubbock Movies 16 and XD draws the curtain on Lubbock
Cinemark closed one of its Lubbock locations in 2025.
What happened: A reason was not given for the closure.
When: Feb. 9.
Where: 5721 58th St.
Colbert’s General Store closes after 13 months in downtown landmark
Chuck Colbert will open a general store within Metro Tower Lofts, 1220 Broadway.
What happened: This general store inside Metro Tower aimed to add a new space to downtown. After 13 months, it closed. The shop had struggled to gain foot traffic prior to closing.
When: June 28.

Copper Caboose restaurant closes location, claims pending expansion

What happened: After 24 years of serving Mexican and American cuisine, the owners announced the Ave. Q location would close immediately. In the announcement, it also hinted at a “new location on the horizon.” The announcement also directed customers to visit the other location, 50th Street Caboose, 5027 50th St.
When: Sept. 2.
Where: 5609 Villa Drive.
Shut down: Copper Caboose Lubbock closes with little notice, claims new location in the works
Costa Vida among first restaurants to close in 2025
What happened: A reason was not given for the closure, however it was among the first restaurants to close in the year. Several other restaurant chains and franchises fell after, including a Taco Villa and a Starbucks.
When: Jan. 15.
Where: 4410 114th St., #200.
Curby’s Express Market shuts down in Lubbock, claims new locations to come
Fresh pizza sits on the counter inside Curby’s Oct. 21, at 7200 W McCormick Rd. in Amarillo. The store also serves flavored teas and lattes, along with salads and desserts, among other items.
What happened: Curby’s was a Lubbock-born convenience store known for colorful drinks before giving a same-day closure notice via social media. The business claimed new locations would be coming soon at the time, but the upcoming locations tab has since been removed from the website. This leaves only one location – 7200 W. McCormick Road in Amarillo. Company comments on the new Facebook page do not indicate a return to Lubbock.

In Amarillo: Curby’s Amarillo celebrates opening with freebies, chance to win free drinks for a year
CVS Pharmacy shuts down 50th Street location

What happened: Letters went around Oct. 6 to alert customers that the store would be closing within the month. Employees were transferred to one of the other nine locations across the city. While a reason was not giving in the letter, the company announced hundreds of locations would close starting in 2021.
When: Oct. 21.

Executive Inn issues evictions, shuts down due to high crime rates

What happened: People staying at Executive Inn received 3-day eviction notices that claimed the city wanted the place vacated due to recent “overdoses, shootings and robberies.” The Lubbock Police Department later clarified that the city had sought the owners’ compliance to cease criminal activity, but did not demand this action. However, the department did say it supports the decision.
When: Oct. 7.

Hawaii Fluid Art ends after 3 years
What happened: After opening in December 2022, the interactive fluid art shop offered classes, private events and offsite events.
When: Dec. 13.
Where: 2910 W. Loop 289, Suite 605.
Hillside Lounge and Cafe / Willi C’s Breakfast House and Lounge closes restaurant
What happened: A reason was not given for the closure of this family-owned soul food restaurant. It soon became Willi C’s Breakfast House & Lounge, which seemed to have closed in October.
When: Jan. 5., Willi C’s closed in October.
Where: 2510 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Home Treasure Gallery closed without formal announcement
What happened: The store lasted about three years and closed without notice.
When: April.
Where: 5102 A 60th St.
Los Victor’s Mexican Food closes, quickly replaced by southern restaurant

What happened: While a reason was not posted, the restaurant appeared to struggle gaining traffic for months prior to closing. Four months later, Sam’s Southern Eatery officially returned to Lubbock in the former Los Victor’s.
When: Early May.

Lucky Dollar ends retail store after nearly 3 years

What happened: The owners of this retail store decided to close the location.
When: June 18.
Where: 4408 50th St.
Mountain Hideaway Outdoor Outfitters closes after 33 years
What happened: The shop that outfitted adventurers since 1992 announced closing sales via social media on Dec. 18. The owners, in the post, stated “the winds have changed.”
When: A date had not been announced, but closing sales started on Dec. 18.

Adventure ends: Mountain Hideaway Lubbock store to close after 33 years
On The Border Mexican Grill and Cantina closes amid bankruptcy filing

What happened: The closure happened around the same time the company filed for bankruptcy.
When: Feb. 8.
Where: 6709 Slide Road.
Party City shuts down after Chapter 11 bankruptcy
What happened: The company filed, again, for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, according to a December 2024 report. After months of closing sales, it shut down.
When: Mid-March.
Where: 6038 Marsha Sharp Freeway West, #100.
Pei Wei ends 18 years in Lubbock
What happened: No reason was given for the closure. It was one of the first to close in 2025, along with several other long-lived restaurants.
When: Early January.
Where: 4210 82nd St., #230.
Play Street Museum quietly closes children’s space
What happened: The owners decided to close the museum, which held exhibits, toys and hosted crafting events.
When: Nov. 16.
Where: 10609 Slide Road #400
Retro Riley’s ends physical store due to low foot traffic, continues as online shop
KK’s Corner Mall features local businesses in their 40,000 sq. feet space, Friday, Jan.12, 2024.
What happened: This shop, now exclusively online, sold rockabilly clothing and merchandise at KK’s Corner Mall. Owner Nickie Riley attributed the closure to a lack of in-person business.
When: Jan. 31.

River Rose Boutique ends Lubbock operation, continues in New Braunfels
What happened: The Lubbock location closed after the owners decided to continue with their sole storefront in New Braunfels.
When: Sept. 21.
Where: 2110 Broadway.
Rusty Taco closes after 2 years

What happened: Rusty Taco opened in 2023, but by December 2025, the restaurant was empty.
When: December.
Where: 6030 Marsha Sharp Freeway W., #200.
Salt by Angie closes after 4 months as chef-owner shifts focus
What happened: Chef Angie Ragan posted on social media on July 7, stating “I need to step back, regroup, and get stronger for what’s next.” The post hinted that Ragan will keep catering and competing in cooking contests.
When: July 7.
Where: The Historic Kress Building, 1109 Broadway.
Sprinkles Cupcakes ends bakery, ATMs after less than 2 years
Sprinkles Cupcakes will open in Lubbock at 8004 Quaker Ave. on Nov. 9, 2023.
What happened: A reason was not given for the short-lived bakery and cupcake ATMs. The location now serves as Field House Deli, a Plainview favorite that opened the Lubbock location in May.
When: Jan. 11.
Where: 8004 Quaker Ave., Suite C.
Starbucks closes location in Lubbock due to ‘transformation strategy’ with little notice

What happened: A message to employees, issued Wednesday, stated that 1% of stores would close across the brand, a move that follows CEO Brian Niccol’s Back to Starbucks transformation strategy, according to USA TODAY. While locations were not listed by the company, paper signs appeared on affected locations. One of those was Lubbock’s newest, which opened in early March 2024.
When: Sept. 28.

Sub-Zero Bites & Sips closes shop, location now serves barbecue
What happened: The owners decided to pursue new opportunities. The location is now Tommy Bob’s Snak Shak, a barbecue drive-thru that also sells snacks.
When: Jan. 27.
Where: 3334 66th St.
Taco Villa closes one of 10 locations, possibly due to 19th Street construction issues
What happened: Taco Villa shut down without a stated reason, though the company still has nine locations throughout Lubbock. However, the closure does come amidst years of road construction on 19th Street, which TxDOT officials told the Avalanche-Journal had been delayed.
When: Mid-June.

The Co-Op Public House quietly closes without notice

When: Mid-August.

Tommy’s Famous Burgers retires after 47 years
Tommy’s Famous Burgers suddenly shut down over the weekend after 47 years of operations, as seen on Monday, Sept. 29, 2025 in Lubbock, Texas.
What happened: A paper taped on the door stated the restaurant was closing due to retirement, with a billboard in front of the restaurant reading “Now RVING.”
When: Late September.
Where: 117 University Ave.

West Texas Printing Center ends operations
What happened: The printing press operated by West Texas Printing Center — which has produced publications including the Avalanche-Journal, Amarillo Globe-News and newspapers in Abilene, Wichita Falls and San Angelo among others — closed as printing was shifted to other locations.
When: Sept. 7

Wienerschnitzel with plane table to become El Pollo Loco
A plane-shaped table at Wiernerschnitzel, 7102 Quaker Ave., will soon take off to a new location in Lubbock, Texas.
What happened: Palmetto Assets, LLC, owns several Wienerschnitzel locations across Lubbock. The company decided to close this location, known for its airplane table, and replace it with the first El Pollo Loco restaurant in 2026. The iconic table will also live on in the Wienerschnitzel at 6319 82nd St., after the table is renovated in 2026.
When: Dec. 7.

Wilshire Place Senior Living closes due to ‘unattainable business model’
What happened: This senior living facility shut down its Erskine Street location due to issues relicensing and becoming an unattainable business model.
When: July 10.
Where: 6410 Erskine St.
Wing Shack and Tap House taps out after less than 2 years
What happened: The wings restaurant, owned by the former owner of La Bella Pizza, opened in June 2023. An explanation was not given for the closure.
When: Feb. 10.
Where: 5412 Slide Road, Suite 100.
Wood’s Boot City ends 47 years due to ‘uncertain economy’

What happened: After 47 years of business, the boot shop closed its doors at the Lubbock location, though it will live on in Colorado City. The closure was first announced in April, with the owners stating, “the challenges of an uncertain economy and the struggles of small family businesses have made it impossible for us to continue.”
When: June 28.
