‘Low and beneath the dignity’ of a vice president

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., criticized Vice President Vance on Thursday morning, calling his comments about fellow Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth “low.”

Durbin posted on the social platform

“Senator Duckworth has never backed down from a fight, even with the Vice President. She fought for and won a seat in the Senate fighting for veterans, people with disabilities and the people of our state,” Durbin added, praising his fellow Prairie State senators.

“J.D. Vance should be focused on fixing the mess his president created, not a senator who has earned the Senate’s respect for his courage and effectiveness.”

On Wednesday, Duckworth lashed out at Vance after the vice president blasted Vance’s line of questioning during a Senate hearing. He compared her to the fictional character Forrest Gump, who was depicted as suffering from physical and intellectual disabilities.

“Forrest Gump was in danger in Vietnam. Your boss ran to his podiatrist crying about bone spurs,” Duckworth wrote on the X, noting President Trump’s medical military service extension.

“A small insult at the expense of people with disabilities doesn’t change the fact that you’re risking the lives of soldiers to boost Chevron’s stock price,” she added. “It’s my job to hold you accountable.”

Vance earlier posted on X, “Watching Tammy Duckworth obsessively interrupt Marco Rubio at a hearing was like watching Forrest Gump argue with Isaac Newton.”

The Hill has reached out to Vance’s office for comment.
