Longtime Saint Mary’s coach leaving for Big 12 job

One of college basketball’s longest-tenured head coaches is leaving.

St. Mary’s coach Randy Bennett agreed to terms to become Arizona State’s next head coach on Monday. He replaces Bobby Hurley, whose contract was not renewed after the season after 11 years.

Bennett has been the Gaels’ head coach since 2001 and has reached the NCAA tournament 12 times in 25 years. He was selected as the WCC Coach of the Year seven times, won the conference regular season championship four times, and won the tournament championship seven times.

He left St. Mary’s with a record of 589-228.

Bennett is an Arizona native. He grew up in Mesa and attended Mesa Community College before transferring to UC San Diego. Now, he returns to his hometown to take over a Sun Devils program that has made the NCAA Tournament once since 2019.
