Even though the transfer window is still months away, Liverpool are still being linked with new players on an almost daily basis.

The Reds are in dire need of reinforcements and if they don’t improve significantly next season, they could be in a worse position than they are now.

The Champions League is the Anfield side’s only target at the moment and it’s unclear whether they can reach the quarter-finals as they were beaten 0-1 by Galatasaray on Tuesday night.

If they fail to beat the Turkish Super League side, some serious questions need to be asked and some major changes need to be made in both the staff and player departments.

As mentioned, the transfer window is not yet open, but that hasn’t stopped Liverpool from engaging in several bidding wars in an attempt to solidify their place in the pecking order.

Liverpool in ‘close contact’ with Moussa Diaby as bidding war approaches

The latest news from TEAMtalk suggests that former Aston Villa ace Moussa Diaby is on the Reds’ list of potential targets to replace Mohamed Salah, with the club “seriously considering” signing the Frenchman.

Diaby is now “keen” to return to Europe after a lackluster spell in Saudi Arabia.

The Etihad currently value the attacker at around £35m, with the Saudi club “open” to a loan deal with the option to buy when the loan expires.

Liverpool are said to be in “close contact” with Diaby’s representatives, however, with other clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Newcastle United also interested in the former Villa man, there could be a “fierce bidding war” for the attacker.

This would be a far from ideal situation for Liverpool, especially as they don’t want to spend more than £35m on the attacker due to his poor goal returns this season.

Moussa Diaby would be a huge transfer risk for Liverpool

There were times when Diaby showed his best qualities when he was playing for Aston Villa.

However, as his time at Villa continued, it became clear that the best thing he brought to the table was his pace.

And, while that’s useful, it’s something that’s not often seen in the Premier League, and with his final third form not being the best, it feels like the Frenchman would be a rather risky signing.

The attacker has scored just three goals in 33 appearances in all competitions for the Etihad this season.

He has already provided 13 assists to his teammates, but with the Saudi Professional League being several levels below the Premier League, it’s unclear whether those numbers will translate into the same.

Diaby can be used on either wing if required, however, the fact that he was 27 when he joined Liverpool also needs to be taken into account. Especially since he’s expected to be the Reds’ long-term replacement for Salah.

There are a lot of moving parts in football and things can change at a moment’s notice, but although Arne Slott is currently in contact with Diaby’s representatives, it appears to be a rather risky deal for the club.
