Liverpool already have £52m agreement in place for summer transfer

Liverpool will activate a deal worth £52m this summer.

Richard Hughes oversaw one of the most expensive rebuilds in Liverpool’s history as the club looked to reinvent the squad for a new era.

He broke the club’s transfer record twice, bringing in big-name players such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.

But so far, Liverpool have yet to get a return on his investment.

Many of the players brought in are long-term fixes rather than short-term fixes. They are young players who will develop over time. Because of this, the true success of Hughes’ recruiting strategy may only become apparent over the next few seasons, once these players have had time to settle in, grow into the system and make a lasting impact on the team.

However, that doesn’t mean Liverpool shouldn’t do better. That’s not an excuse for the head coach, it’s more about Hughes looking at the bigger picture.

His rebuilding was just beginning. This will continue this summer.

Hughes’ focus will shift further down the field. Despite the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet, strengthening the defense will remain a priority.

The young centre-back is considered a promising long-term addition, but the overall defensive situation means Anfield may need further reinforcements.

Ibrahima Konate is entering the final months of his contract and with little progress being made in talks over a new deal, a move away is increasingly likely.

If he does leave, Liverpool will need another high-level centre-back to maintain depth and quality in the position.

There are also longer-term considerations. Club captain Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are under contract until 2027 and both could leave at the end of next season.

As a result, recruiting this summer will likely focus on immediate cover and players who can shape the defense for years to come.
