Lions OC candidate David Blough takes Commanders job

The Detroit Lions were reportedly interested in former backup quarterback David Blough for their vacant offensive coordinator position, but he has now been ruled out. Commander Washington chose to hire Brough as their The new offensive coordinator replaces the recently departed Kliff Kingsbury.

It’s been a meteoric rise for Blough, who didn’t retire from the NFL until just days after the 2023 season. Since then, he has served as the Commanders’ assistant quarterbacks coach the past two seasons. He also served as interim quarterbacks coach during the final month of last season after Tavita Pritchard left to become Stanford’s head coach. While rare, quick moves up the rankings are not unheard of in the NFL. The most recent example is Kellen Moore, who retired in 2017 and became the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach in 2018 and offensive coordinator in 2019. Five years later, he was hired as the Saints head coach.

It’s unclear how involved the Lions are in the process of pursuing Braff as offensive coordinator, as there have been only reports of interest. It’s not even clear if Detroit ever got to the point of interviewing Braff.

Regardless, they’ll have to start over if Braff is one of their primary options. Detroit has also expressed interest in three other known candidates: former Dolphins head coach Mike McDonald, Seahawks passing game coordinator Jake Pitts and Ravens quarterbacks coach Ty Martin.
