Vonn’s return to competitive skiing after knee surgery has been a remarkable story. Then she tore her ACL in a car accident days before the Olympics, just to confirm that she would compete no matter what.

The 41-year-old was preparing for her first medal in the women’s downhill on Sunday, posting the third fastest time in Saturday’s second rainy run.

Vonn, ranked 13th, started confidently but hit the flag with her right shoulder and fell hard. She received medical attention, visibly in pain, before a helicopter arrived to take her down the slope, as is customary when contestants are injured.

Vonn made contact with the flag in the air, then lost his balance and hit the snow hard. She turned over several times before stopping on her back.

The 2010 Olympic champion could be heard shouting in agony as medics worked on her on the slopes. BBC journalist and former Olympian Chemmy Alcott said background music had to be played to the shocked crowd.

Vonn was eventually flown down the ramp by helicopter, at which time she received a standing ovation. The game was delayed for more than 10 minutes while Vaughn received treatment.
