Leody Taveras hits first career grand slam and Orioles hold on for wild 7-5 win over Royals in 12

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Leddy Taveras drove in five runs and a grand slam in the 12th inning and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Royals 7-5 on Monday night, handing Kansas City its eighth straight loss.

With the Orioles’ final hit in the ninth, Samuel Barzaro tied the game at 1 with Baltimore’s second hit of the game, an RBI single off Dylan Beavers. Barcalo then took the lead in the 12th inning when Alex Lange (0-2) singled and automatic runner Coby Mayo scored to make it 3-2. Jeremiah Jackson singled and Weston Wilson walked to load the bases for Taveras, whose first career grand slam came 419 feet to center field.

That sent Royals fans out, but Kansas City made things interesting in the second half when Nick Loftin hit a bases-clearing double off Cameron Foster. The rookie then walked out the next three batters, striking out Kyle Isbell to end the game.

The Orioles also got their last at bat in the 11th when the Beavers singled John Schreiber to score automatic runner Blaze Alexander for a 2-1 lead. Bobby Witt Jr. tied the game (1-0) in the bottom half with a two-out, two-RBI single off Anthony Nunez.

The Royals’ Seth Lugo allowed one hit in seven innings and led 1-0 on Jac Caglianese’s first homer of the season, a 437-foot one-out shot to right field in the second inning.

Lugo, who lowered his ERA to 1.15, walked Gunnar Henderson and then removed him from first base to start the game. Taylor Ward had his 12th double, leading the major leagues, but the Orioles didn’t get another hit until the ninth. Lugo struck out seven and walked four.
