when things happen
The headlines before the game were that Haaland was not in City’s squad, with Guardiola replacing the Norwegian with Rayan Cherki from the start. Meanwhile, Daniel Farke named an unchanged squad following Leeds’ 1-1 draw at Villa Park last weekend.
Leeds missed a great chance in the early stages when Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed the opportunity when he was left unmarked in the penalty area. Semenho seized City’s first chance of the game, but his shot went wide but was ruled offside.

There was a brief break in the 12th minute to allow the players to take a break as they celebrated Ramadan. Calvert-Lewin went close again moments later, twisting and turning in the penalty area before firing a left-footed shot wide of the post. The first shot of the afternoon came from James Justin, whose long-range shot was confidently saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The home side came close again in the 20th minute, with Brenden Aaronson shooting wide from close range following a challenge from Mark Guy. The Citizens began to get into the game towards the end of the first half, withstanding intense pressure from the home team.
However, Aaronson came closest again, breaking through the City defense following Anton Stach’s brilliant pass, but Donnarumma was on hand to deny the opener. At the other end, Omar Mamouche and Nico O’Reilly both had shots saved by Karl Darlow.
It was Semenho and City who opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, with the forward scoring from just inside the six-yard box following a fine run and pass from Ryan Aite-Nouri. This meant the away team led 1-0 at halftime.

City’s first real chance of the second quarter came on the hour mark when Ruben Dias’ shot went wide and ended up at the feet of Mamouche, but the Egyptian failed to capitalize.
With 25 minutes left in the game, the home team made their first substitution of the game, and Aaronson was replaced by former Manchester City youth player Lucas Nmecha.
A few minutes later, Aite Nouri’s long shot missed, and then Malmouche was withdrawn by Savinho.
O’Reilly’s night ended due to injury in the 69th minute, with Tijjani Reijnders taking his place.

Darlot was called on shortly after and blocked Guey’s shot, whose header seemed destined for the top corner. More changes ensued at Leeds, with Daniel James and Wilfried Genonto brought in to support Jayden Bogle and Ilya Gruev.
The Whites continued to push for an equalizer, with numerous balls in and around the box being defended well by City, but the bombardment continued until Cherki cleared his line to take some of the pressure off.
Leeds won a corner kick with just over five minutes left in normal time, much to Dias’ disgust who believed it should have been a goal kick.
In the end, after Donnarumma received the first yellow card of the night, the corner kick was cleared by Manchester City.

Minutes later, the Peacocks won another corner kick, this time with Guey blocking the ball after receiving a cross from James.
Joel Pirro and Jacques Bjorn came on in the final minutes, replacing Justin and Joe Rodon in search of an equalizer. Behor came close to scoring with his first touch, heading wide from the aforementioned corner.
City made their own changes in a bid to preserve their lead, with Cherki replaced by Nathan Ake for the remainder of the game. The home side looked to be causing chaos in the penalty area again, this time through a long ball from Ethan Ampadu, but the ball was easily dealt with by City as six minutes of stoppage time were confirmed.
Savinho and Ait Nouri found their way into the referee’s notebook after being deemed a waste of time as City looked to secure three points by any means necessary.
