Largest male great white shark ever seen in Atlantic Ocean turns up off North Carolina coast
Stay tuned – OCEARCH reported that on February 8, the great white shark “Contender” was detected again in the Atlantic Ocean about 45 miles southeast of Cape Fear near Wilmington, North Carolina.
At approximately 1,700 pounds, Contender is the largest male great white shark OCEARCH has ever tagged in the western North Atlantic.

He spent much of January swimming off the Florida coast after being tagged along the Florida/Georgia coast last year.

“Contender’s SPOT tags will continue to provide real-time location data for years to come, supporting ongoing white shark research and conservation efforts,” OCEARCH said in an Instagram post.
‘Contender’ for Atlantic’s largest ever male great white shark reappears off Canadian coast
The organization added that the great white shark was named “Contender” in honor of Contender Boats, Inc., a long-time partner of OCEARCH whose vessels support its offshore research mission.
Previously, Contender has conducted ping tests in places such as Canada, New Jersey and the Massachusetts coast.
Contender, the 14-foot-long, 1,600-pound great white shark, the day it was tagged by OCEARCH in January 2025.
