It’s been more than two weeks since the bodies of beloved filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were found in their Brentwood mansion on Dec. 14. However, the public still has more questions than answers about the details of what exactly led up to the shocking murder, and it looks like that may continue to be the case – at least for a while.
Although fans This is a spinal tap The filmmakers have been anxiously awaiting the medical examiner’s report into the brutal massacre, as their deaths are at the center of the ongoing investigation, and the Los Angeles Police Department announced that they had ordered a “secure seizure” of all documents “until further notice.”
On Monday, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner released a statement that read in part:
“On December 24, at 10:30 a.m., the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Department (Department) received a court order initiated by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) regarding Forensic Case Nos. 2025-19480 and 2025-19481, Robert Reiner and Michele Reiner Holding securely. While the cause and manner of death in these cases have been previously released, due to a court order, that information is not available or available on the website until further notice.”
Just before Christmas, the death certificates for Rob, 78, and his 70-year-old wife were released, stating that the official cause of death was “multiple sharps injuries” (or stabbings) and the manner of death was classified as homicide. Remarkably, the Lehners died within minutes of their injuries.
Rob and Michelle’s 32-year-old son Nick Reiner was arrested, just hours after his parents were found in their home, where their youngest child, 28-year-old daughter Romy Reiner, was found.
Nick is currently being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles and has not yet been arraigned due to ongoing issues with his competency to stand trial. He briefly appeared in court on Dec. 17 wearing shackles and a suicide vest, but his arraignment was not formally scheduled until Jan. 7.
Nick hired high-powered defense attorney Alan Jackson, who has represented big-name clients including Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey and who this summer helped win Karen Reed’s acquittal in the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe.
Jackson urged the public not to jump to conclusions about the case, saying: “We ask that, in this process, you allow the system to move forward the way it was designed to move forward, not to rush to judgment, not to jump to conclusions, but to exercise restraint, dignity and the respect that this system and this process and this family deserves.”
The LAPD concluded its statement by acknowledging that they understand “the public’s interest in these cases and remain committed to transparency when possible. Information will be provided once the court order is lifted.”
