Kyle Busch Shared Why Each Race Win Remains Special in One of His Final Interviews Days Before His Death

Less than a week before his death, NASCAR legend Kyle Busch reflected on the meaning of his race win.

Busch’s family, NASCAR and Richard Childress Racing announced in a joint statement on Thursday, May 21, that Busch passed away after being hospitalized for a “serious illness.” He was 41 years old.

A week before his death, Busch won the 2026 Ecosave 200 at Dover Speedway. There, he celebrated his 69th NASCAR Truck Series victory, setting the record for most wins in series history. He later told Old Row Sports that winning never gets old.

“Because you never know when the last time is going to be, you know?” Bush told the media.

“Unfortunately, I know that all too well,” he continued, thanking fans and adding that Dover, Del., “will always be one of my favorite places to race.”

He then competed again in the 2026 NASCAR All-Star Race at Dover on Sunday, May 17, where he finished 24th.

“Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the passing of Kyle Busch,” the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and NASCAR said in a joint statement. “A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare, once-in-a-generation talent. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and the fans.”

“NASCAR lost one of the giants of the sport today, far too soon,” the statement continued, asking that the Busch family’s privacy be respected.

On Thursday, May 21, the Busch family announced that the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion has been hospitalized and will miss two upcoming races in North Carolina. He was scheduled to compete in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Concord Speedway in North Carolina on Friday, May 22, and Sunday, May 24 in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

During an international match at Watkins Glen on 10 May, he requested medical assistance. At the time, he was heard asking his team over the radio to have a doctor pick him up on a bus near the garage. During the broadcast, Fox Sports said Busch had a “sinus cold.” Days later, Bush told reporters he had a “bad cough.”
