Klopp reveals what Milner took with him when he left Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp explains why James Milner’s Premier League appearance record is more than just a number, as it is built on an unusual combination of discipline, influence and the intensity and passion Liverpool supporters have observed up close for eight seasons at Anfield.

Milner, 40, became the most capped player in Premier League history on Saturday when the Brighton No.20 made his 654th top-flight appearance, surpassing Gareth Barry’s long-standing record.

Reflecting on Milner’s achievements in an ESPN interview, Klopp described the former Liverpool midfielder as one of the most unique professionals he has ever coached.

Klopp said: “He’s probably the most disciplined, stubborn, strict professional football player I’ve ever worked with, and he also has the greatest heart.”

This quote falls because it embodies the Milner we all know, the relentless standards in training, the leadership that doesn’t require shouting, and the off-field work that is as important to him as game time.

Klopp paid more than a simple tribute, as he explained that Milner shaped dressing room culture in a way that many supporters have never seen.

The former Liverpool boss admits he didn’t fully appreciate how much Milner had done until the Leeds-born midfielder left in 2023, as rules and structures quietly slipped away with him.

Klopp said: “It was only after he left that I realized it…someone came to my office and asked…what’s the fine? I said, ‘Oh, so far I don’t know who did it.’…’Oh, Millie.’ So he took everything with him. Not the money, but all the rules. So, because Millie left, we had to reset it.”

This most clearly explains why Milner is more than just a practical tool to us, as standards are often enforced by individuals rather than posters on the wall.

It also ties in well with what Andy Robertson said in his tribute to Milner, the Scotland left-back said “Mindset and Character” What you said is correct, but those who persist should not forget “What a football player” Milner is.

Klopp also believes Milner’s versatility is a key reason why the midfielder continues to find new ways to contribute, including playing as a full-back, which became a hallmark of our strongest years.

Klopp said: “Oh, yes, absolutely, 100 percent… the more positions you can play, the longer your lifeline is, 100 percent.”
