Alabama head coach Karen DeBoer recently took a moment to talk about the Crimson Tide’s current quarterback battle after their first two practices of the spring.
Coach DeBoer and his staff will undoubtedly have tough decisions to make in the future. The Tide are currently in the midst of a quarterback battle between Austin Mack and Keelon Russell, as each signal-caller has excelled during Alabama’s first two practices of the week.

DeBoer gave an inside look at how each signal-caller performed during the first two practices of the spring, and the Alabama head coach praised both quarterbacks’ improvement from last year.
“You can tell they have a lot of reps from last year,” DeBoer said. “Playing with confidence, calling the game with confidence. Both of them are light years ahead of where they were a year ago, and obviously they should be.”
“Talent level isn’t an issue as far as that, it’s just a matter of them building a rapport with the skill around them. When they’re out there throwing the ball, feeling the timing and the trust, and getting comfortable in the pocket. It’s just about getting comfortable over time with your offensive line getting the job done up front. I like what they’ve done through two practices. Creating some good burst on their ends, good feel, and being mobile when necessary.”
Russell is rated as the No. 2 quarterback and No. 2 overall player in the 2025 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Last season, Mack and Russell served as Ty Simpson’s No. 2 and No. 3 quarterbacks, respectively, as each player is an extremely talented signal-caller who could easily become the Tide’s starter next season.
As spring practice continues, Coach DeBoer and his staff are expected to continue evaluating each quarterback.
