Speaking at an event in Pennsylvania, Vance claimed there were “simple economics” behind why buying a home in the U.S. has become so expensive, and his response went viral for being… odd.

“Why are rents going down for four months in a row? We’re starting to push these illegal immigrants out of the United States,” Vance said.

“Those criminals, those gang members, those people who took away their homes, those deserve to be returned to the people here, your children and your grandchildren,” Vance continued, pointing to the crowd.

“It’s simple economics. If the population goes down, and there are fewer illegal aliens trying to buy homes, that means U.S. citizens will eventually be able to afford housing again. It’s very, very simple economics,” he said.

A quick fact check: Experts say there is no evidence that undocumented immigrants are the main cause of rising housing costs in the United States, but rather a lack of supply, WRAL reports.

As you might have guessed, the reaction was immediate, with the overall consensus being that Vance’s claims…don’t hold up.
