The arrival of Michael Carrick has allowed Manchester United to return to a back four, with Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot attracting increasing attention.
Shaw and Dalot appear to be Carrick’s favorite full-back pairing. However, there are doubts over the long-term future of both players.

Shaw has performed well at full-back under Ruben Amorim but is struggling with the physical demands of left-back and having to move up and down the pitch. His reckless challenge opened the door for West Ham’s goal on Tuesday.
Dalot has rediscovered his form under Carrick’s leadership, arousing strong interest from Real Madrid.
Manchester United chasing Julian Ryerson
Manchester United are one of the clubs following Borussia Dortmund’s creative powerhouse Julian Ryerson, reports SportsBoom.
The 28-year-old full-back, able to play either left or right, has enjoyed a prolific season with Dortmund, directly contributing 13 assists in all competitions.

Julian Ryerson Statistics: 2025/26 Season
Ryerson was outstanding against Mainz on Friday, dishing out an astonishing four assists in the game, a tally that only three players before him have achieved in the Bundesliga since the 2004/05 season.
The Norwegian’s performance is said to have “alarmed England’s biggest consumers”.
Dortmund willing to sell Julian Ryerson
Borussia Dortmund are reportedly ready to accept a £35m bid for their “tactical pillar” who will join Borussia Dortmund from Union Berlin in 2023.
United are believed to be “planning a comprehensive defensive overhaul” and view Ryerson as “the perfect strategic target to address long-standing issues with the full-back rotation, particularly his passing and defensive discipline.”

Ryerson is believed to be willing to move to the Premier League “for a pay rise”.
However, the Red Devils face stiff competition from Newcastle United, who are aiming to replace Kieran Trippier with the “perfect” Borussia Dortmund star.
Meanwhile, Sunderland and Leeds United are interested in Manchester United left-back Terrell Marascia, who is set to join on a free transfer in the summer.
