Jonathan Trott explains stance on England role after ending stint as Afghanistan coach

Jonathan Trott has expressed his interest in one day coaching England cricket after finishing coaching Afghanistan cricket.

The former England top-order batsman’s days with the Asian nation came to an end after they were eliminated in the group stages of the T20 World Cup, with Trott scoring a lopsided victory over Canada in the final game.

The 44-year-old has spent almost four years in the role and guided Afghanistan to the semi-finals of the last T20 World Cup, their first semi-final of a major tournament.

Trott, who also worked as an assistant at top-100 side Trent Rockets, has been tipped as a possible successor to Brendan McCullum, with the England boss under pressure after a disastrous Ashes season.

While Trott insists he has no plans, he admits the idea of coaching England in the future is appealing.

“I’m not going to let you put words in my mouth, but, you know, I really like this,” said Trott, who scored nine hundredths in testing. “I don’t know what the future holds.

“Maybe I have a few days off and see how it goes. I’m looking forward to seeing how the rest of the World Cup goes. I hope we’re still here and able to play in the next round.

“I’m extremely proud of the way I’ve played throughout my career and always want to see England do well. I hope to one day be given the opportunity to coach a team that you hold dear to your heart.

“I’m sure there’s a lot of guys out there who would love to do this job. So, yeah, we’ll have to see. But I’m just trying to enjoy my coaching career. And, you know, I’ve definitely enjoyed the last few years here.”

England will play a round-robin match against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the Super Eights, with the top two teams qualifying for the T20 World Cup semi-finals.

India, South Africa, West Indies and Zimbabwe were ranked first in the first phase and formed the other group.
