The Buffalo Bills shocked the NFL when they fired head coach Sean McDermott after nine seasons, but they didn’t go out of their way to hire a high-profile player.

Instead, the Bills promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to head coach after a search that included former OC Brian Daboll and 30-year-old Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski.

Brady becomes the NFL’s youngest head coach at age 36, but he already has a familiar relationship with Josh Allen and the Bills Mafia for four years.

The Bills will add Brady on Thursday, just one week after owner Terry Pegula and general manager Brandon Beane held a controversial press conference to explain McDermott’s firing.

He surpassed Kellen Moore of the New Orleans Saints to become the league’s youngest current coach and continued a rapid career rise, coordinating record-breaking offenses at the college and professional levels.

While Brady currently holds the crown for youngest active coach, the all-time record still belongs to Sean McVay, who was famously hired by the Los Angeles Rams at age 30.

9:30 am — Brady arrived at the Bills practice facility before sunrise this morning, arriving in shorts despite a 12-degree temperature.

Why did the Bills hire Joe Brady?

Pegula explained during last week’s press conference that the Bills weren’t happy with their continued playoff disappointment, but they clearly weren’t blaming Brady after cutting McDermott.

While the Bills changed their offense after replacing OC Ken Dorsey in 2023, focusing more on the running game and freeing up James Cook while trying to contain Josh Allen’s turnovers, the defense was often more of a problem than the offense in McDermott’s clutch moments.

After all, Buffalo scored 30 points on the road in a playoff loss to the Denver Broncos despite committing five turnovers.

By promoting Brady, the Bills give Allen some continuity and familiarity while also giving the young offensive mind a chance to reshape the locker room culture.
