Jets rookie Brady Cook steps in for injured Tyrod Taylor, makes NFL debut against Dolphins

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets rookie quarterback Brady Cook made his NFL regular-season debut Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, replacing the injured Tyrod Taylor with 3:39 left in the first quarter.

Taylor left with what the Jets called a groin injury. The team said his return was questionable.

Taylor’s final pass was deflected and intercepted, allowing Miami to score a touchdown and take a 21-0 lead.

Cook, an undrafted free agent signed out of Missouri in May, handed the ball to Brees Hall on his first two possessions and then threw an incomplete pass to Adonai Mitchell before the Jets punted.

Cook serves as Taylor’s backup because Justin Fields is out Friday with knee soreness.

Cook, who passed for 9,008 yards, 49 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in five seasons at Missouri, was signed to the active roster Saturday. He has been elevated from the practice squad for the first two games of the season but has not played.

Cook went 25-for-38 for 235 yards and a touchdown with one interception in three preseason games.
