‘It just kept getting worse and worse;’ Neighbors scared after county-wide backup call at motel

Two people are behind bars in the Montgomery County Jail after a disturbance in Vandalia Saturday night led to a countywide call for backup.

Just before 11 p.m. on January 3, Vandalia police officers arrived at the Hawthorne Suites Hotel for a report of disorderly conduct.

A woman called police after she was told to leave the extended stay hotel after an argument, but she refused, a spokesman said.

She started fighting with a man, then an officer.

When officers attempted to arrest her, police said the man also assaulted an officer.

A large crowd surrounded the scene to watch the incident unfold, prompting police to call 99 for backup.

Brenda Keller, a neighbor in the area, said she had never heard such an argument.

“It’s getting worse and worse,” Keller said.

Neighbor Keller said she was scared.

“I’m still confused, no one was hurt. It’s just a bad situation,” Keller said.
