Mike and Dan recap a week of bizarre Islanders games and present an epic Master Leaf Theater/Ranger Piece Theater double play with special guest Dominic Janski.
They endured an exciting miraculous win on their road trip to Canada West, as well as two disappointing losses and missed opportunities. By playing in fits and starts, the Islanders have kept themselves alive but haven’t quite crossed the line to keep themselves safe in playoff contention. After a weird near-blowout/comeback/deflating loss in Winnipeg, they won 1-0 (!) in Edmonton on the back of a stellar performance from Ilya Sorokin and a timely power-play goal. They followed that up with a sloppy loss in Calgary where they almost looked guilty for stealing a handful elsewhere in the province. It all leads up to the final two games of the trip — tonight in Vancouver and Wednesday in Seattle (TNT reports) — to determine the schedule ahead of the Olympics. Two wins and they are in good shape. Two losses and it’s time to worry. Add in a home game against the Sabers, and three winnable games on paper carry a lot of weight. So even with Bo Horvat back, those players who have been silent on the scoresheet need to step up.

For the second half, we welcome back good friend and Lighthouse Hockey founder Dominik Jansky for an exciting version of Master Leaf Theatre, in which “Master Leaf Theatre’s Charles Dickens” follows Mitch Marner on a journey through his life in Las Vegas before his first game with the Maple Leafs. What we found was a regular guy working in a new city, which of course is impossible to understand if you only think about living in Toronto. We also got some pre-game audio clips of Auston Matthews, as well as a mysterious “Mikey from Long Island” who called Sportsnet The Real Kuyper & Byrne Show.
But wait! There’s more! (After the second commercial break). We also had Dom read a bit for the brand new Ranger Piece Theater about the team’s latest white flag letter, which no one is buying as the start of a new reunion. Owner James Dolan is repeating himself, while general manager Chris Drury is closer to Mike Milbury territory. Only one person has the guts to call this latest tactic what it truly is: applesauce.
