Iran says it is implementing sentences against convicted January protesters

DUBAI, March 23 (Reuters) – The cases of individuals arrested in connection with protests across Iran earlier this year have been processed and final judgments are being carried out, First Deputy Director of the Judiciary Hamzeh Khalili said on Monday.

Nationwide anti-government protests rocked the country in January and were suppressed in the largest crackdown in the Islamic Republic’s history.

Judiciary news outlet Mizan quoted Khalili as saying: “The cases of terrorists and rioters in January have been processed. In some cases final judgments have been issued and are being executed. Some cases have been executed in the past few days and we will report on them. The criminals in these cases will not receive leniency.”

Last week, Iran executed three men convicted of killing two police officers during riots earlier this year, raising concerns from right-wing groups such as Hengaw that Tehran is ramping up executions of political prisoners and protesters amid growing military and international pressure.

Khalili added that the judiciary would not show any leniency to what he called “infiltrators, mercenaries, traitors who collaborate with the enemy” as hundreds of people have been arrested in March since the war with Israel and the United States began
