An already difficult season has gotten even worse for Tyrese Haliburton.
The Indiana Pacers All-Star ruptured his Achilles tendon in Game 7 of last season’s NBA Finals, sidelined the entire season and now has shingles.

That’s according to head coach Rick Carlisle, who announced Haliburton’s condition to reporters on Sunday. According to Carlisle, Haliburton will miss the team for 2-3 weeks due to illness.
According to the Mayo Clinic, shingles can be transmitted to anyone who is not immune to chickenpox. This situation does not affect Halliburton’s availability. His Achilles tendon injury is expected to sideline him until the start of next season at the earliest.
But he was dealing with a disease that can be “extremely painful” and typically affects people 50 or older, according to the Mayo Clinic. According to the Mayo Clinic:
“Pain is often the first symptom of shingles. For some people, the pain can be severe. Depending on the location of the pain, it can sometimes be mistaken for a heart, lung or kidney problem.”
Carlisle told reporters that Haliburton is experiencing pain and is expected to make a full recovery.
“It’s a very painful thing,” Carlisle said, according to the Indianapolis Star. “He’s going to make a full recovery, but this happened over the past few days.”
“He met with us in Washington, had some weird symptoms, and then he came back here. That’s what happened to him. We certainly wish him a speedy recovery. It’s a unique case and a unique situation, but I’ve talked to him a few times and he’s always in a good mood, so he’ll get through it.”

Haliburton had emerged as one of the best guards in the NBA last season before suffering an Achilles injury. He was selected to the All-NBA Team for the second time in his career and led the Pacers to an unexpected run into the NBA Finals as the fourth seed.

There, the Pacers held the champion Thunder to seven games. But Haliburton suffered a long-term calf injury early in Game 7 and ruptured his Achilles tendon early in the first half. The Pacers were unable to recover from the injury, and Haliburton’s promising career was derailed by one of the worst injuries in sports at the age of 24.
Haliburton hopes to recover in time to return to an All-NBA team in the long run. In the short term, he’s dealing with a troublesome disease.
Meanwhile, the Pacers finished last in the Eastern Conference with a 15-43 record after winning last season’s division title.
