IND vs NZ: India post 255 in first innings; what is the highest successful run chase in T20 World Cup final history?

Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan led India to score 255 for 5 against New Zealand, the highest total in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

Samson scored 89 runs, Abhishek scored 52 runs and Kishan scored 54 runs as defending champion India set a target of 256 runs for the Black Caps.

India also recorded its highest score in T20 in Ahmedabad. It was also the third-highest team total in T20 World Cup history, slightly higher than India’s score against England in Mumbai three nights ago.

This is the fourth time in 2026 that India has scored 250 or more runs, the highest scorer ever.

India has scored 52 runs in the last five overs.

New Zealand needed 256 runs to win. The target is higher than the total set by England in the ICC World Cup 2019 final.

New Zealand retired in the second innings of the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup final against India in Ahmedabad, needing to post the highest chase success rate in the tournament’s history.

The previous highest number of successful chases was achieved by England, who tied the score at 230 against South Africa at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in 2016.

Most successful runs chase T20 World Cup final

No team has managed to chase 176 runs in a T20 World Cup final. Australia faced New Zealand in the 2021 final and scored 173 points, ranking second. New Zealand had lost both of their previous matches at Ahmedabad, with their highest score at this venue being 175 runs. Interestingly, New Zealand has never scored 180 here.

At the time of writing, New Zealand are in dire straits, trailing by 4 wickets at 70 runs in 7.4 overs.
