IDF strikes Iranian F-14 fighter jets, air defense systems in second week of Operation Roaring Lion

The jets were based at Isfahan airport, where Israel previously destroyed a Ghadr-class ballistic missile and its launch platform.

A military spokesman announced on Sunday that the Israel Defense Forces had attacked more than 400 targets in Iran over the past day.

Targets successfully destroyed by the IDF included several Iranian F-14 fighter jets, as well as detection and air defense systems that posed a threat to IDF aircraft.

Iranian F-14 received in 1976

Iran took delivery of 79 U.S.-made F-14s in 1976, when the country was still ruled by the Shah. These were captured by the Islamic Republic after the 1979 revolution.

The F-14 was retired by the U.S. Navy in 2006 and replaced by the F-18.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is the only country still operating twin-engine fighter jets.
