How to Update Your PS4

With a slew of great games on the horizon like DriveClub and LittleBigPlanet 3, and games like BloodBorne and Uncharted 4 on the horizon, the PlayStation 4 (PS4) is undoubtedly the most popular next-gen console out there.

The PS4 is getting better with every update, and the latest one promises to bring long-awaited features like pause/resume on Xbox One.

Another reason to keep your PS4 updated is to prevent losing access to network features. This results in an annoying error message asking you to “Update system software to use network features.” Updating the system software can resolve this issue and is necessary for games with online multiplayer capabilities, such as Destiny and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

Here’s what you need to know about how to update your PS4 – There’s a way to do it even if your PlayStation 4 isn’t connected to the internet.

Update via internet

  1. If your PS4 is connected to the internet, turn it on. Press the console’s power button or the PlayStation button on the Dual Shock 4 controller. It’s the button in the center of the controller.

  2. On the home screen, select the toolbox icon named set up.

  3. In settings, select System software updates. choose Update using the Internet. This allows your console to check for the latest firmware updates. If you are not already using the latest firmware, you will be prompted to download it and it should boot immediately.

  4. Once the download is complete, a notification will appear in the upper left corner. On the home screen, select notify icon and select download. exist downloadselect the firmware file and follow the instructions to install it.

Update via USB

  1. Purchase a USB flash drive. It should have at least 320MB of free space and the file format should be FAT32.

  2. Insert the flash drive into your computer’s USB port. Open it and create a new folder. Name it PS4. In PS4, create another folder. Name it update. The file name must be named as is, using uppercase letters only, so that the PS4 can recognize it.

  3. Download the update file to your PC from the Sony website. Copy it to the UPDATE folder on the USB flash drive. The file name should be PS4UPDATE.PUP.

  4. Connect the USB flash drive to the PS4. from set upchoose System software updates. choose Update from USB storage device. Follow the instructions to update.

  5. If the PS4 system does not recognize the update file, please check whether the folder name and file name are correct. Enter the folder name and file name in uppercase letters.

Update via game disc

  1. When you insert the disc containing a newer version of the system software, it displays a screen that guides you through the update process. Follow the instructions to update.
