Apple changed the default camera format for photos and videos from JPG to HEIC (High Efficiency Image Format) in iOS 11 to save space on your phone. Now, this may be an old change, but once you share your iPhone photos and videos to your laptop, you’ll find that it can’t open them because it’s in the HEIC format, which isn’t the most widely supported.
Although HEIC can save high-quality photos in smaller sizes compared to JPG, converting HEIC images to JPG can be annoying. Additionally, Apple doesn’t provide an option to change the camera app’s default settings. You must go into Settings to switch formats. Here’s how.
- Go to set up on your iPhone.
- tap camera. You will see options such as format, grid, retention settings, and camera mode.
- tap Formatand change the format from “efficient” to “most compatible”.
- Now all your photos will be automatically saved as JPG instead of HEIC.
However, it should be noted that the photos you have already clicked will remain in HEIC format, only new images you click will be saved as JPG.
