Since October last year, WhatsApp has offered an option to permanently mute notifications for individual chats and group messages on its platform. However, this option is useless when you are mentioned in a group chat where you have muted notifications. You will continue to receive notifications if users in the group reply to a previous message you sent or mention you in a thread. This isn’t technically a flaw, but it can be annoying if multiple members of a muted group mention you or reply to your previous messages.
However, you can silence such notifications by following the workaround originally reported by WABetaInfo.
How to mute mention notifications on WhatsApp
You can mute notifications for messages that mention you or respond to your existing messages in a group that has muted notifications on Android and iOS. It also works on WhatsApp Web or its desktop client. What you need to do is mute the notifications of individual users who mention you or reply to your previous messages in a muted group.
To mute an individual user’s notifications, you can simply go to their profile on WhatsApp and tap on that user’s name. After that, look for Silent notifications option on Android or silent on iOS. You can choose from three options – 8 hours, weekly or always silent notification options.
This feature comes in handy when you can’t leave a WhatsApp group but don’t want to receive continuous notifications when someone in the group mentions you or replies to your message.
WABetaInfo reports that the workaround works even if WhatsApp has the reported multi-device support enabled. It essentially synchronizes notification rules across devices.
